The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles including a stunning opening victory by the Zulu at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879.

The Battle of Rourke's Drift, also known as the Defence of Rorke's Drift followed the British defeat at Isandlwana, on 22/23 January 1879. Just over 150 British troops defended the garrison against an assault by between 3 000 and 4000 Zulu warriors. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded. On the morning of the the Battle of Isandlwana, 1329 British and "embedded" Zulus who were fighting with the British, perished.

The other famous battles include the Siege of Eshowe, The Battle of Intombi, the Battle of Kambula and the Battle of Gingindlovu.
